Passing the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban

Ending a Barbaric Blot on Our Nation's History

National Pro-Life Alliance members have played a key role in advancing through Congress a ban on perhaps the most brutal form of abortion.

National Pro-Life Alliance members generated more than 1.1 million petitions to Congress in favor of the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban right at the moment when Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA) and the pro-abortion Senate cabal were threatening to block passage of the Ban with a filibuster. When the filibuster fizzled due to the pro-life outcry, the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban became the first piece of federal legislation ever to regulate or restrict abortion.

Years of pro-life activism finally paid off on November 5, 2003 when President George W. Bush made good on his campaign promise to pro-lifers by signing the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban into law.

Although the Ban passed by an overwhelming margin of virtually 2 to 1 in both houses of Congress, radical pro-abortion groups immediately moved to block enforcement of it in federal court.

National Pro-Life Alliance members played a key role in the legal battle that ensued, sending a clear message to the Supreme Court with a successful amicus brief in favor of the Ban, which the National Pro-Life Alliance filed with the Court prior to the proceedings.

Despite the efforts of the abortion lobby to block its enforcement, in April of 2007 the Supreme Court upheld the Federal Partial-Birth Abortion Ban, validating the first ever federal measure to restrict the so-called "right" to abortion since the tragic 1973 Roe v. Wade decision.

Even more importantly, it reverses the public debate over the murder of innocents.

Partial-Birth Abortion Murders Children Just Inches From Full Birth

Cranking up the public debate over this procedure proved to be a pure winner for pro-life forces.

While it is true that many politicians who voted for the Ban could not be called pro-life, the resulting debate exposed many politicians who opposed it as radical supporters of abortion-on-demand.

The names used for this type of abortion, "dilation and extraction" and "partial-birth abortion," give only a small idea of its horror. The baby is basically delivered except for the head. The infant is then brutally killed and extracted.

Only inches separate a partial-birth abortion from a live birth, protected by the criminal homicide statutes.

But just inches short of full delivery; this tiny baby can be killed and discarded.

The "partial-birth" abortion is an operation so grotesque and so barbarous that an overwhelming majority of the American public agrees with us that it should be outlawed.

Partial-birth abortion is the most graphic example of where the radical pro-abortion movement is taking America, yet abortion apologists continue to toe the line for the abortion industry.

Sadly, even with the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban in effect, abortionists are still free to dismember, torture and kill unborn babies in any number of ways.

Still, passing the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban was a huge political victory and a demonstration of the strength of the pro-life movement in America.

NPLA Members Crank Up Public Debate over Partial-Birth Abortion and Expose Callousness of Pro-Abortion Radicals

And the public debate surrounding partial-birth abortion exposed the callousness and extremism of the abortion movement and its minions in Congress, many of which paid a steep political price for their blind support for the horrid procedure.

Following a hard-hitting TV lobbying campaign funded by NPLA members exposing their prior votes against the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban, Senators Max Cleland (D-GA), Jean Carnahan (D-MO) and Chuck Robb (D-VA) were all defeated in their reelection bids.

In a huge upset former Senate Majority leader Tom Daschle (D-SD) was defeated by Republican challenger John Thune, who ran on a strong pro-life platform.

That's why, with the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban now the settled law of the land, NPLA members plan to take advantage of the pro-life political momentum gained by this victory and focus on even more ambitious pro-life legislation, such as the Parental Notification and Intervention Act and the Life at Conception Act which would overturn Roe v. Wade in Congress.
