Prohibiting Dangerous Abortive Drugs Like RU-486

Revoking the FDA's Politically Motivated Approval of the "Abortion Pill"

Despite many reported health risks, the RU-486 abortion drug has been sold in America for over two years now.

This is an outrage, and has deceived many into thinking that ending a pregnancy is as easy as swallowing an aspirin.

Sadly, recent deaths and serious complications from RU-486 prove what a deadly deception it is.

The nation was outraged when Holly Patterson, an eighteen-year-old California girl, died as a result of taking the RU-486 abortion pill that was given to her by a local Planned Parenthood facility without her parents' knowledge.

Holly's parents did not even know she had been pregnant until hours before her death brought on by septic shock as a direct result of taking the drug.

The public outrage from Holly Patterson's death has prompted renewed efforts by Congress to ban the deadly drug. Congressman Roscoe G. Bartlett (R-MD) introduced a bill [H.R. 63] that calls for the revoking of the Food and Drug Administration's approval of RU-486.

RU-486 Approval Rushed Without Safeguards

On September 28, 2000 the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the drug RU-486 for abortive use. The decision has been widely criticized as politically motivated on the part of Bill Clinton in his last days in office.

In order to assure approval of the drug before the election, the FDA granted RU-486 special “accelerated approval” status, allowing standard testing procedures to be bypassed.

Accelerated approval is rarely invoked, and then only for drugs treating life-threatening illnesses. This move also was noteworthy because it was the first time that pregnancy has ever been classified as a life-threatening illness.

Furthermore, the controversial drug is made by a state controlled entity in Communist China that is not subject to U.S. controls and safeguards.

Recent Deaths and Dozens of Dangerous Complications Attributed to RU-486

Even prior to Holly Patterson's death, the recent deaths of other women in the Unites States - along with other incidences of serious complications - forced even the FDA and Danco Laboratories, the New York firm that distributes the abortion pill, to issue warning letters to physicians.

By the FDA's own admission, in addition to the two deaths prior to Holly Patterson's, at least twenty-two other women required hospitalization or another "intervention to prevent permanent impairment or damage."

Side effects suffered by women after taking the drug include hemorrhage and severe bacterial infections. One woman, age 21, suffered a heart attack three days after taking the abortion pill. She had no prior history of heart trouble.

Congress Now Has the Evidence to Revoke RU-486

Needless to say, the Clinton-era FDA never even considered in its “deliberations” the death of the infant, nor the serious psychological impact on women that all abortions inevitably bring about.

With the recent deaths and complications associated with this human poison, lawmakers now have the evidence they need to get RU-486 off the streets.

Even Eduardo Sakiz, the CEO of RU-486’s original manufacturer, has since admitted taking the abortion pill causes “an appalling psychological effect” for many women.

For these reasons, National Pro-Life Alliance members are urging Congress to pass H.R. 63 and revoke the FDA's approval of RU-486, the only drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration whose express purpose is to obliterate a human life.
