Ending Taxpayer Funding of Abortion

Halting Taxpayer-Funded Welfare for Killers of the Unborn

The disastrous 1973 Supreme Court decision, Roe v. Wade, thrust abortion-on-demand upon the nation, resulting in the deaths of millions of unborn babies every year.

But that isn't enough for the abortionists. They also want taxpayers to pay for it.

Every chance the abortion industry gets, it attempts to loot federal coffers to fund the killing of unborn babies.

Whether it is spending taxpayer money to fund abortion through private insurance mandates, Medicaid, health plans for federal employees, military personnel, women in federal prisons, or the United Nations Population Fund's support of coercive abortions abroad, there seems to be no end to the abortion industry's thirst for tax dollars.

The Nation's Largest Abortion Provider Has Already Received Over Five and a Half Billion Dollars From Taxpayers and Now Demands More

Abortion providers such as Planned Parenthood continue to receive hundreds of millions of tax dollars every year under Title X, which subsidizes their overhead for promoting abortion as they divert more and more resources towards the killing of the unborn.

In 2010, Planned Parenthood revealed a total income of $1.1 billion. Taxpayers shelled out $363 million to pad the abortion provider's bottom line through federal and state grants and contracts (or 33% of its entire income).

All the while, Planned Parenthood cut back non-abortion related programs like adoption, breast cancer screening and infertility treatment, and demanded that all its affiliate centers offer surgical abortion.

Recent undercover stings revealed a body of video evidence of illegal Planned Parenthood activities, including the willingness to aid and abet the sex trafficking of young girls, the cover-up of sexual abuse of minors, the skirting of parental consent laws, lying to manipulate women to have abortions, and willingness to accept racist donations to abort African-American babies.

And Abby Johnson, a former southeast Texas Planned Parenthood Director, revealed the depth of the abortion mills' deception, spouting social welfare rhetoric while pushing the incessant drive to increase the number of abortions.

In all, American taxpayers, including pro-lifers, sent a total of almost five and a half BILLION tax dollars to Planned Parenthood since the 1960's.

With Pro-Life Election Victories in Congress Comes a Renewed Push to End Taxpayer Funding of Abortion

As a new wave of Congressmen have been sworn in, the National Pro-Life Alliance and its members have geared up to strip taxpayer funding of abortion from every line of the federal budget.

It may not be possible to outright repeal many of President Obama's bills such as the so-called "ObamaCare" scheme to channel more than eight billion dollars to abortion providers.

That's why NPLA and its members are fighting tooth and nail to make sure that Congress does not provide any funds for budget lines which directly or indirectly channel tax dollars to abortionists.

Since pro-lifers’ biggest election gains were in the House of Representatives where budget bills must originate, NPLA members and pro-lifers can exercise extra clout by keeping the pressure on Congress.

Although many politicians repeat Planned Parenthood's claim that none of these taxpayer dollars will be used directly for abortions, the promise is a hollow one that Planned Parenthood is able to skirt easily.

The fact of the matter is that through a simple accounting trick, every federal dollar that goes to Planned Parenthood's overhead and programs frees up another dollar to directly promote or provide an abortion.

Banning the Flow of Tax Dollars to Abortion Providers Through Title X

The good news is due to the ongoing efforts of the abortion lobby to push abortion funding, some pro-life Congressmen are taking steps to ban federal dollars from flowing to abortion.

Congressman Mike Pence (R-IN) introduced his bill, the Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act (HR 217) with 170 cosponsors, and he introduced the same bill as an amendment to the federal budget that passed the House 240 – 185.

If passed on its own, or as part of the budget, the bill would ban money from the Title X family planning fund from going to facilities that use abortion as part of family planning.

Of course, because Planned Parenthood is the largest abortion provider in the nation, this bill would sever the flow of federal dollars to them and other organizations that slaughter innocent babies.

With a record number of new Congressmen who campaigned as strongly pro-life arriving at Capitol Hill, NPLA members and other pro-lifers have a unique opportunity to hold those Congressmen to the promises they made on the campaign trail.

NPLA Fought the Massive Abortion Funding That Slipped into Healthcare Overhaul

NPLA and its members have long been actively involved in the fight to end the flow of tax dollars to abortionists.

For example, the ObamaCare overhaul included at least 8 billion in tax dollars to subsidize the abortion lobby and forced taxpayers to underwrite the cost of insurance plans which provide convenience abortions.

To fight against it, the National Pro-Life Alliance mobilized more than one million committed pro-lifers in targeted states and districts across the country, who in turn flooded Congress with hundreds of thousands of post cards, petitions and letters.

Then, in the final week before the vote, National Pro-Life Alliance staff called thousands of pro-lifers who lived in the Congressional Districts of 20 swing states.

These NPLA members and other angry pro-lifers shut down the Capitol Hill switchboard during the final voting with floods of calls opposing the bill.

Pressured By Pro-Lifers, Democrat Leadership Resorts to Deception and Payoffs

Facing heat from NPLA members and other pro-lifers, the Democrat majority leadership first resorted to deception by allowing pro-life amendments that they had no intention of including in the final version of the bill.

In an attempt to appear pro-life, Congressman Bart Stupak (D-MI) proposed a tough amendment that protected against abortion funding which passed when enough Democrats joined the Republicans to pass it.

But in the end, 38 of those same House Democrats switched to vote with the White House and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for the Senate version which, due to Senator Ben Nelson's (D-NE) earlier sellout, did not have pro-life protections either.

Pro-Lifers Were Not Fooled By White House Games

The White House tried to offer political cover for the Democrats by drafting an Executive Order which claimed to protect against tax funding of abortion, but pro-lifers weren’t fooled.

Even Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards dismissed the Executive Order that President Obama and Congressman Stupak agreed to as a harmless, “symbolic gesture.”

When the dust settled, it was apparent that the supposedly pro-life amendments were simply a distraction and provided no protection to the unborn whatsoever.

After wooing pro-lifers only to sell out at the critical juncture, Bart Stupak anticipated his political future by announcing that he would not run for re-election.

And weeks after his vote for tax funding of abortion on ObamaCare, Congressman Alan B. Mollohan (D-WV) did not even survive his primary election.

In the end, NPLA members and NPLA's Political Action Committee (NPLA-PAC) made sure the Obama Administration’s victory was politically costly.

By using popular rage over ObamaCare, NPLA members played a vital role in the 55 new seats that pro-lifers picked up in the 2010 elections.

While lobbying the candidates against taxpayer funding of abortion, NPLA identified and mobilized more than two million pro-life households in nearly one hundred targeted Senate and House districts nationwide.

All told, member contributions allowed NPLA to spend more than three million dollars on a whole series of phone calls and mass mailings in those target races.

For example, NPLA conducted extensive pro-life voter identification and mobilization campaigns in states where voters made pro-abortion Senate contenders like Russ Feingold (D-WI), Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) and Joe Sestak (D-PA) pay the ultimate political price for their support of Obama's tax-funded abortion agenda.
